A Glossary:

Associates - women and men affliliated with the congregations of sisters usually with some informal commitment (not vows).

Candidates are those preparing to be accepted into different forms of membership by an institute or congregation.

Disputatio or honest discussion listens for the spark of truth in even opposing arguments that the fullness of Truth may be revealed.

Dominican Laity - vowed membership in the order of lay members under the direction of the friars.

Dominican Volunteers - people who live in community and share in the ministry for a set period of time.

The Dominican High School Youth Preaching Conference and the College Preaching in Action Conference foster preaching in all its forms among young people in our schools and colleges.

Friars - priests and brothers living the vowed life in community.

Novices - a formal preparation time for first vows in a congregation or the Order. There are canonical novitiates which all vowed religious fulfill under the laws of the Church or canons. Some congregations also have non-canonical novitiate time where those preparing for vows are focused on ministry in according to congregational norms.  The length of a novitiate is according to the constitutions of the institute or congregation.

Nuns - in monasteries living the vowed life within the cloister.

Sisters - living the vowed life in community.

Veritas - the motto of the order - Truth.
