St. Catherine of Siena , doctor of the Church, began the third Order and was known for her letters and dialogues and her influence that lead the pope to return to Rome. She was mystic who cared for the sick in hospitals and was a force to be reconned with in the Church of her day.
St. Albert the Great, was a teacher and scientist ahead of his time for he sought the presence of God in all of the cosmos. He was also a bishop of Regensburg.
St. Thomas Aquinas wrote the Summa Theologica. He had special devotion to the Blessed Sacrament .
St. Rose of Lima, a native of the Americas worked with the poor slaves and indigenous people of South America.
St. Martin DePorres, a friend to Rose of Lima, was known for his holiness and his care of the poor. slaves, and indigenous peoples.
St. Hyacinth, apostle of Poland, bears the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of Mary which he had rescued from a burning Church.
St. Catherine de Ricci was a well-balanced mystic known for her letter writing. As prioress she was noted for her guidance and response to the needs of the poor.
St. Louis Bertrand, Apostle of South America and patron of Novice Masters. He tried to correct abuses the Spanish heaped on the natives.
St. Margaret of Hungary, was a princess was very aware of the needs of her country. Her prayer and response to those in need were joyous.
Blessed Cecilia was one of the first Dominican nuns. She gifted the order with a vivid description of Dominic.
Blessed Jordan of Saxony, the second Master General, holds in his hand a scroll bearing the words “Salve Regina” because he introduced the singing of the Salve after Compline.
Blessed Imelda who died after receiving Our Lord is the special patroness of novices.
Blessed Henry Suso was a lover of Divine Wisdom and a mystic.
Blessed Jane de Aza is shown as noble matron with her little boy, Dominic, to teach us that it is never too early to teach children the ways of God
Saint Agnes of Montepulciano founded the Dominican monastery in Montepulciano. She was an exemplary active contemplative.
St. Antoninus, Bishop of Florence, preacher and teacher, began a modern form of social services. The scales reflect a legend about a rich person’s gift to the poor which only received a “Deo Gratias” in return.
St. Raymond of Pennafort was a great canonist and third Master General with a great commitment to the poor and suffering. He is depicted riding the sea on his cloak when the King of France wouldn’t allow him to depart.
Blessed Zedislava of Bohemia is known for her work with the sick and the poor.
St. Peter of Verona was an outstanding preacher and miracle worker assigned to the tribunal of the Inquisition. His attempts to convert the heretics infuriated his enemies who martyred him.
Blessed Diana was a noble woman who gave up everything and became the foundress of a convent in Bologna.
St. Vincent Ferrar was a preacher of penance and founder of hospitals. He is shown with trumpet heralding God’s call to all.
The Saints of the Order of Preachers are numerous. In fact martyrs in Spain were beautified this fall. We believe in the communion of saints that there are many more Dominicans who may not be canonized but are among the community in heaven. Below in random order are a least of some of the more commonly venerated saints pictured in our motherhouses and throughout the Order.
