More on the Dominican Way of Life or Charism:
the deep search
Common Life - our vowed life in community with God, self, others and the earth.
Mission - our life in community with God, self, others and the earth.
Our individual congregations all manifest these gifts in varied ways Our unique histories color our individual and corporate expression of these gifts. Some of our congregations were founded by Americans; others are part of the "Regensburg tree" with roots in the Germany carrying a more monastic tradition. You will find expressions of our individual histories on our congregational links: Amityville, Blauvelt, Caldwell, and Sparkill. These pages also link to individual congregational websites.
The Order of Preachers sharing the Gospel for over 800 years.
Our Dominican Life as members of the Order of Preachers is rooted in a deep history and spirituality. Our family traits or gifts were described by the Second Vatican Council as the charism of the Order. Our deep search for Truth or Veritas -- God in all that has been created and continues to be in Jesus Christ is central to our lives.
The Order of Preachers has a deep commitment to Social Justice and maintains a presence at the United Nations. Our Congregations have taken many stands against nuclear war, the war in Iraq, the death penalty, trafficking of women and genetic engineering of food to name a few. We unite our efforts to have a broader voice. Recently we have raised awareness of the plight of the Iraqi refugees.

We try to integrate our lives through the four pillars of prayer, study, common life, and mission. We like to look at things from many viewpoints another is the motto "To Praise, to Bless and To Preach." Each is an attempt to live our lives in Truth and with justice.
We know we cannot do it alone. We need help in order to live our vows and follow in the way of Dominic. It's about the mission. And so we need community which we also describe in the words of the Acts of the Apostles as common life.
